3 Way conferences

Room 19 have been working hard on their 3 Way Powerpoints so they can share with parents where they are at with their learning and what their goals and next steps are. Here is a link for parents to download some information on how you can support your child's learning at home:

Good luck with these ideas, keeping learning fun and doing a little bit often will get the best results.

Botanic Gardens trip

Our recent Botanic Gardens trip was a great experience. Thank you to all the parents who joined us on the trip and helped out. We were able to come back to school with a lot of new learning about raising native plants. We also came back with lots of seedlings to plant on our next Green Day at school.

One of Room 19's goals this year is to make our Nature Trail at school even better!

Congratulations!

A big congratulations to all those who stood up and did a great job of promoting themselves for the job of House Leader. You were not all able to be chosen, but by standing up and speaking to a group and promoting yourself as a potential leader you have all been very successful and deserve a big CONGRATULATIONS!!

Welcome to Room 19 2012

Monday

Camp!

Camp is the last week in Term 3! A great challenge and one of the highlights of the year. Our Movie Night again will make a great contribution in fundraising.

Looking forward!

When asked recently at assembly what there was to look forward to at Marshall Laing Primary school over the next few months there were many responses: Zone sports, talent day, ICAS exams, Movie Night, Camp, Student Council Handball Competition and more. There are many exciting events coming up for our very lucky Toitoi Manawa students.

Our brain study

Towards the end of term 1 Room 19 dissected sheep brains as part of our Learning to Learn unit that focused on how we learn. It was an enjoyable and challenging experience that created rich learning.

Filming!

Room 19 has started filming their movie 'Attack of the Orange Soda!'. Here is a picture of one of our props. We have also done some stop motion animation, live action filming, Pivot animation and soundfx.

Stu Duval is coming back!

Stu Duval is coming back to tell us more stories and teach us great things about writing and drawing. Another fantastic opportunity for MLPS students, and a great introduction for next term's writing unit.

Talent Development

Talent Development is a new opportunity for students in the senior school this year. There are a range of options that teachers are offering with a view to extending the experiences and opportunities that students at MLPS can have. The focus for most of the activities is to allow children to have a hands on experience, learning or developing a skill. Some of the options on offer are : Sewing and stitching, Cooking, Design, Sports, A music Band, Enviro gardening group, Painting and more.

Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal at MLPS raised $1000 for the people of Christchurch. Room 19 would like to thank all the families who contributed to raise this money.

Zone Cricket

MLPS recently enjoyed good success at the Zone Cricket competition at Keith Hay Park. Team A had many talented individuals and also some Year 4 students and did very well to win one of their games and compete strongly. Team B, who were our team of less experienced cricketers, were able to win all of their games and win the B Division. Congratulations to both teams who represented MLPS proudly, displaying great sportsmanship.

Jump Rope

MLPS supported Jump Rope for Heart again this year. Students participated in a round robin of activities before being part of a skipping demonstration. Students and teachers alike were encouraged to wear red clothes or dress in 80s costume.

Green Day

Room 19 has a class garden. We are growing broccoli and spinach seedlings that the school has provided and lettuce and coriander seeds that a student from Room 19 brought into plant. Two years ago Room 19 made silverbeet soup from its garden, I wonder what we will make from this years' harvest!

Three Way Conferences.

A recent focus in Room 19 has been goal setting and then creating Powerpoints for our Three Way Conferences. We are focussing on knowing where we are in maths, reading and writing. Then we are setting goals for where we want to be by the end of term 2. We are then creating next steps and a Powerpoint to explain all this to our parents during Three Way Conferences in Week 9.
